Why is there weak airflow from some of my vents?
When one or two vents blow weakly and the rest are fine, the problem is usually the duct that feeds them. A duct that is crushed, kinked, torn or disconnected delivers less air, or none at all.
In many Bay Area homes, ducts run through the attic or the crawl space, where nobody sees them for years. Rodents chew them, storage boxes get pushed onto them, and connections work loose. The first sign is often a room that never quite cools or heats like the rest.
What should I check first?
Start with the easy things inside the house before you look at the ducts.
- The air filter: a clogged filter cuts airflow to every vent.
- The vent itself: make sure the louvers are fully open.
- Furniture and rugs: a couch or a rug over a vent blocks it.
- The thermostat: check the settings, and that the system is actually running.
If the whole house has weak airflow, the system itself may need an HVAC technician. If only some rooms are affected, the ducts to those rooms are the likely cause.
How do damaged ducts cause weak airflow?
Air takes the easy way out. If a duct is torn, the air escapes into the attic or the crawl space. If it is crushed or kinked, less air gets through. If it has come apart at a joint, the room at the end gets almost nothing.
Common duct problems we find:
- Ducts with a torn or missing outer jacket, and insulation showing.
- Ducts that sag, kink or are flattened.
- A duct that has come loose and blows air into the attic or crawl space.
- Chew holes or droppings on or inside the ducts.
How can I tell if a duct is disconnected?
A vent with little or no air while the system is running is the biggest clue. Sometimes you can also hear air rushing in the attic or under the floor.
If you open the attic hatch while the AC runs and feel cool air up there, or the crawl space feels oddly warm in winter, conditioned air is leaking where it shouldn’t. Dust blowing out of the vents when the system starts is another sign of damaged ducts.
Why are some rooms hot even with the AC on?
Usually a mix of weak airflow and heat. The rooms at the end of long duct runs, and the rooms under the hottest part of the roof, struggle most.

Can rodents damage air ducts?
Yes, and it is a common cause of duct damage. Rats and mice chew through the outer jacket and the insulation, nest on top of ducts, and leave droppings on and inside them.
Replacing chewed ducts fixes the airflow, but the openings rodents use have to be sealed too, or the new ducts get chewed next. We seal with galvanized steel mesh, putty and concrete. See rodent proofing and how rats and mice get into your attic.
Should damaged ducts be patched or replaced?
Patching one spot rarely fixes weak airflow for long: when one run is torn or crushed, the rest of the system has usually aged in the same heat, dust or rodent traffic.

How do you replace damaged ducts?
The old, damaged ducts come out and are taken away with us. New flexible insulated ducts are run, connected and supported to fit the height and layout of your attic or crawl space.

Does weak airflow mean my AC is broken?
Not necessarily. If the system blows strong air at most vents and weak air at a few, it is likely working, and the ducts to those rooms are the issue.
If every vent is weak, or the air isn’t cool at all, call an HVAC technician to check the system itself.
Can I fix a crushed or loose duct myself?
Moving a box off a duct, yes. Reconnecting or replacing ducts in a hot attic or a tight crawl space is harder: connections have to be sealed and supported properly, and it is easy to crush another run while you work.
If you see droppings around the ducts, follow the CDC steps: gloves on, and don’t sweep or vacuum them.
